Every 2 minutes a child dies of malaria
a disease that can be prevented and treated

The Dutch Malaria Foundation is a charitable organisation that supports innovative ways to fight malaria and makes existing knowledge and information about fighting malaria available to stakeholders all over the world.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease. It is caused by a parasite that is transmitted from one person to another through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. People who suffer from malaria often suffer from fever, chills and flu-like symptoms. If malaria is not treated quickly, people can die from it. The WHO estimated that in 2019 at least 229 million people got sick with malaria of which at least 409,000 have died. Most of them were young children in Africa.

Committee of recommendation

Femke Halsema

I am touched by the problems caused by malaria and certainly by the fact that in nobody needs to die from the consequences of infection. We have to make a change.

Prof. Robbert Dijkgraaf

Vision

The Dutch Malaria Foundation is committed to a world without malaria. We want to achieve this through the implementation of integrated, accepted malaria control interventions in combination with innovative applied research, education and information. We value the protection of people against disease. But also essential in the fight against malaria is the elimination of its transmission source: the malaria mosquito.

Mission

With modern technology, knowledge and experience it is possible to fight malaria. We have successfully eliminated this disease in Europe, the USA and other parts of the world. Malaria hits Africa and Asia the hardest. Almost a million people die of malaria every year. The Dutch Malaria Foundation wants to make a structural contribution to improving health, reducing poverty and stimulating economic development worldwide by combating malaria.
